Illes Balears, Balearic Islands

Moving to Palma

Palma is the administrative centre of the Balearics. The Extranjería office and the regional tax office are all here, which also makes it the busiest municipality on the island for appointments.

Spanish procedures and official fees change. We review this page against the official sources below and show the amounts each authority publishes, never our own estimate.

Move Spain prepares your forms, checks your documents and coordinates the appointment. The decision itself always stays with the authority above.

Living in Palma, the practical part

Professionals and families who want a city with services within walking distance, plus people who work in Palma but look for housing in the surrounding municipalities.

Empadronamiento in Palma

The Ajuntament de Palma publishes its own padrón document list and appointment calendar, and processes several padrón steps digitally when your housing document is in your own name. District offices (OAC) handle the counter appointments.

Decided by Ajuntament de Palma.

Municipal taxes

Palma sets its own IBI property rates and bills them annually. Direct debit is the normal way to pay and avoids surcharges.

Decided by Ajuntament de Palma.

Schools

Public schooling is in Catalan and Spanish. Palma's allocation points system weighs your registered address, so families usually complete the padrón before the admissions window opens in spring.

Healthcare

IB-Salut assigns you to a health centre based on your registered Palma address, and Son Espases is the reference hospital for the island.

Seguridad Social (INSS)

Housing

Rental demand in Palma is high year round and landlords generally expect a NIE, proof of income and several months of deposit and guarantee before signing.

Banking

All major banks have city branches, and most will open an account for a non-resident, then convert it to a resident account once you hold your padrón.

Utilities

Water is billed through the municipal service EMAYA, while electricity and gas are open-market contracts you transfer into your name.

Getting around

EMT city buses, the metro to the university and the TIB regional network cover most daily journeys, and the airport is fifteen minutes from the centre.

Moving with family

Register the whole household in one padrón appointment. School admissions, healthcare cards and family discounts all read from that entry.

What Move Spain cannot do for you

Some steps are legally yours alone. We say so up front, because a surprise halfway through a Spanish procedure costs you far more than an honest sentence here.

You attend in person

  • NIE number: Extranjería takes your signature and checks your original ID at the counter.
  • Empadronamiento: Most town halls ask you to sign at the counter, a few accept an online submission.

You pay the authority directly

  • Modelo 790 code 012 fee, charged by Spanish government, Policía Nacional.
  • Padrón certificate, charged by Your Ayuntamiento.

An external provider is involved

  • Sworn translation, charged by Sworn translator (traductor jurado).
  • Notary or certified copy, charged by Notary.
  • Courier or postal costs, charged by Courier service.

Move Spain is a private relocation service, not a government authority. We prepare, check and coordinate. Why we started Move Spain.

Questions people actually ask

The national rules are the same everywhere in Spain. These answers add what is specific to Palma.

Why people trust us

Here is what you can hold us to. (Palma)

Fixed price, shown before you pay

You see our fee, the government fee and any third party cost before you commit. No hourly billing, no surprises afterwards.

Avoid a rejected appointment

A missing signature or wrong document can mean a second appointment, weeks of delay, or another trip to Spain. A human checks everything before it reaches an official desk.

Updates in your own language

Status updates by email and WhatsApp in English, Dutch, German or Spanish, at every step of your application.

We say what we cannot do

We prepare, check and guide. We are not a law firm and we cannot attend an appointment in your place, and we tell you that up front.

Not sure what applies to you?

Answer a few plain questions and Move Spain determines your route, your documents and your real costs before you pay anything.
